dario di vaira winery

BOLGHERI, ITALY

The Di Vaira family has lived in Bolgheri since 1950. Dario di Vaira was born and grew up here and over time has developed a very close relationship with the region. Being a winemaker has become his life philosophy.

In 2008, after obtaining a university degree in viticulture and oenology, he decided to convert the family farm, which was focused on mixed farming, into a winery with the aim of producing wines inspired by the excellence of Bolgheri, while expressing his own identity and that of the land that the di Vaira family had always cultivated. His vision is clear. To combine, on the one hand, technicality, rationality, close connection with the territory and respect for the surrounding environment, and on the other hand, creativity, interpretation of the vintage and its unpredictability. And Dario's wines are proof that his approach is the right one. High-quality, complex wines are Dario's Bolgeri Superiore DOC and his white wine Rapè.

konyári WINERY

BALATONBOGLAR, HUNGARY

The Konyári winery is a pioneer of wine production on the Balaton. Founded in the 1990s by János Konyári, it is now run by his son Dániel, who studied oenology in Bordeaux and has explored vineyards around the world. The winery is known for the good balance, reliable and ever-increasing quality of its wie, and its willingness to experiment with new styles.

Daniel is constantly exploring the landscape of the Konyári vineyards and creating fascinating wines in the process. The Konyári winery grows a wide range of grape varieties and its red and white wines represent great value. János was named Winemaker of the Year in Hungary in 2008. The winery on Kishegy Hill has been almost all about Bordeaux varieties for the last 20 years. So let's start your wine tour with red Kishegy, through Loliense Vörös to the completely unique Páva.

PODERE IL CASTELLACCIO winery

BOLGHERI, ITALY

Podere Il Castellaccio is located in Castagneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno. The business was founded by Alessandro Scappini in 2009, but the estate has been in his family since the 1960s. Alessandro's grandfather, Luigi Corradini, planted the first hectares of vines during this period, consisting of Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda and Sangiovese varieties, clones of which he brought from Chianti.

The estate stands on the Segalari hill overlooking the Etruscan coast at an altitude of 100 to 160 metres. The production area that has become world famous for wine production is the Bolgheri area. The estate faces the sea and is exposed to the winds coming from the coast all year round, providing an ideal Mediterranean microclimate for growing wine. In addition to the classic Bordeaux grape varieties, the winery also grows some traditional red grape varieties such as Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda and Sangiovese, which produce absolutely magnificent wines such as Valènte and Dinostro. Alessandro lives for his vineyards, he does not use chemicals, he combines tradition and new techniques, and he uses horses to work in the vineyards, which are the other love of his in life alongside his family and wine.

SAVELLI WINERY

SANT´ ANDREA DI SUASA, ITALY

The Savelli family has been farming vineyards in Sant'Andrea di Suasa, a town in the middle of the Marché region, for four generations. From great-grandfather Sabatino in the second half of the 19th century, through his son Sesto and grandson Elio. The reins have now been taken over by Elio's son, Dr Andrea Savelli, who has automatically continued the family tradition of traditional winemaking without the use of artificial fertilisers and chemicals in general, considering sustainable wine production as part of the legacy of his ancestors' generations.

Elio Savelli, who took over the family winery after the death of his father Sesto in 1961, was a convinced advocate of pure viticulture. His lifelong motto was: 'Always organic'. This philosophy was his guiding principle long before the issue of the excessive use of chemicals in agriculture became publicly discussed. And perhaps that is why you can find rare vintages of Savelli wines in the winery's cellars dating back to the 1960s. Elio sadly left us in 2019, but in my heart will always be our first meeting in Sant'Andrea di Suasa and our long evening chat about the history of the Savelli family, pure winemaking, but also about motorbikes, which, as well as wine, were a shared passion. Rest in peace, Elio.

TENUTA BARON WINERY

ASOLO, ITALY

The dream became a reality in the 1970s when Domenico "Nico" Baron bought the Villa Peschicini, whose history dates back to the 15th century. Over time, this magnificent villa also served as a private residence for the Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II.

After 40 years of hard work, the renovation of the entire winery and the construction of a wine cellar dug into the adjacent hill, the Tenuta Baron winery is back to its full glory. The whole family, including Nico´s wife and children, and Andrea Sbrissa, are now involved in its operation. They are transferring all of founder Domenico Baron's efforts to date into the bottles, and he is watching their activity with passion and enthusiasm. And he is rightly proud. See for yourself that TENUTA BARON produces absolutely outstanding sparkling wines, and their range of still wines is well worth a look too. My admiration for Giacomo and Andrea's work dates back to 2018, when I tasted their absolutely fabulous Prosecco DOCG Millesimato Extra Brut.

VEDOVA TARCISIO WINERY

VALDOBBIADENE, ITALY

The history of the Vedova Tarcisio family is a story of devotion to winemaking, passed down from generation to generation, which has led to the creation of top wines from the hills of Valdobbiadene. The Vedova family began winemaking in the late 19th century thanks to Fabiano Vedova.

In the 1930s, his son Romano moved from San Pietro di Barbozza and bought the first farm in Saccol di Valdobbiadene on the Pavei hill at the foot of the Cartizze, where he set up a thriving company involved in cattle breeding, the manufacture of barrels and tools for cellars and the production and sale of wine. In the late 1980s, his grandson Flavio founded Azienda Agricola Vedova Tarcisio, which he named after his father. The winery focuses on the production of sparkling wine. Their Sui Lieviti and Cartizze are made from grapes from the same vineyard, yet their resulting flavour and texture could not be more different. And this is also the art and experience of Flavio and his nephew Nicola, who are the lastest two generations of the VEDOVA TARCISIO winery.
