SAVELLI WINERY
SANT´ ANDREA DI SUASA, ITALY
The Savelli family has been farming vineyards in Sant'Andrea di Suasa, a town in the middle of the Marché region, for four generations. From great-grandfather Sabatino in the second half of the 19th century, through his son Sesto and grandson Elio. The reins have now been taken over by Elio's son, Dr Andrea Savelli, who has automatically continued the family tradition of traditional winemaking without the use of artificial fertilisers and chemicals in general, considering sustainable wine production as part of the legacy of his ancestors' generations.
Elio Savelli, who took over the family winery after the death of his father Sesto in 1961, was a convinced advocate of pure viticulture. His lifelong motto was: 'Always organic'. This philosophy was his guiding principle long before the issue of the excessive use of chemicals in agriculture became publicly discussed. And perhaps that is why you can find rare vintages of Savelli wines in the winery's cellars dating back to the 1960s. Elio sadly left us in 2019, but in my heart will always be our first meeting in Sant'Andrea di Suasa and our long evening chat about the history of the Savelli family, pure winemaking, but also about motorbikes, which, as well as wine, were a shared passion. Rest in peace, Elio.
